1 suspect dead, 9 people injured in attack at Ohio State University

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- (WXIX) -- A suspect is dead and nine people are injured following an attack at Ohio State University Monday.

Officials have identified the suspect as 18-year-old Abdul Razak Ali Artan, the Associated Press reports. Artan was born in Somalia and living in the United States as a legal permanent resident.

The teen drove his vehicle over a curb and into a group of pedestrians, according to campus safety officials. He then exited the vehicle and began stabbing people with a butcher knife.

University Police Chief Craig Stone said the attack was carried out purposefully. Investigators will consider the possibility that it was a terror attack, according to Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on West 19th Street near College Avenue.

“Our officer was on scene in less than a minute and he ended the situation in less than a minute,” said Stone.

The attacker was shot and killed by police.

Around 9:55 a.m., safety officials warned of an active shooter situation in an alert sent to students and staff. Several tweets from emergency crews urged students to “run, hide or fight.”

Authorities later determined the man used a butcher knife in the attack. They said it's too early to determine whether he had any other weapons.

Eight victims were transported to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. An Ohio State spokesman says injuries include stab wounds and being hit by a vehicle. A ninth victim is in critical condition.

The patients were split among OSU Wexner Medical Center, OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, the Associated Press reports.

It's not known whether the injured are students or faculty.
