SAN ANTONIO —- (KABB) -- A Bexar County Grand Jury has indicted a couple for allegedly causing "horrific injuries" to a 21-month-old girl.
The Bexar County District Attorney's Office said 24-year-old Isaac Andrew Cardenas has been indicted for two counts of Super Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. The child's mother, 22-year-old Crystal Herrera, was indicted for one count of Injury to a Child Causing Serious Bodily Injury by Omission.
Investigators say Herrera called 911 back on December 31st, claiming her daughter had been attacked by dogs. When emergency crews arrived at the South Bexar County home, they found the toddler had suffered severe injuries to her genital and anal area. She was taken to University Hospital for treatment.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office investigators and doctors described the child's injuries as horrific and some of the worst they have ever seen. During questioning, both Cardenas and Herrera claimed the victim had been attacked by dogs. But investigators found the child's injuries did not match their story and were instead consistent with a brutal sexual assault.
“It is unthinkable to hear allegations of a mom involved in such horrific behavior,” said District Attorney LaHood. “This alleged abuse is disgusting and will be treated appropriately. We will not grow weary in showing the community how much we value children.”
