TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- (WKMG) -- Six baby kittens were found in a cardboard box Wednesday night outside a permanently closed Animal Services building, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office said.
The location, which has been closed since October, is still being visited by people looking to abandon pets, according to advocate group Space Coast Feline Network.
"They just think that these are disposable and they're not. They just leave them in boxes at the front door," the group's president, Sandy Goad, told News 6. "Unfortunately, the public just hasn't got the hint yet that it's closed."
Goad is now caring for the 2-week-old kittens that her group rescued Wednesday around 10:30 p.m.
The building on Flake Road has a sign at the front door stating the location is closed. There is also another sign in front of the building stating that animal abandonment is illegal.
Goad thinks the signs aren't getting the message across and she said to get results for abandoned animals, larger signs stating the building is closed should be put up. She also said signs should read "Anyone with unwanted animals can take them the SPCA in Titusville or the Brevard Animal Services shelter in Melbourne."
"To get the best results, first of all, is the signage and get the word out to people that there are other options," Goad said. "They deserve a chance at life just like any other animal."
