NEW YORK -- (WPIX) -- An Upper West Side nanny who killed two small children in her care has been sentenced to the maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole, a judge ruled Monday, calling the woman “pure evil.”
Yoselyn Ortega was convicted last month of murder in the 2012 deaths of Lucia and Leo Krim.
Lucia was 6; Leo was 2.
The nanny's lawyer had argued that Ortega was mentally ill and couldn't be held responsible for the children's deaths.
Prosecutors said Ortega knew what she was doing and understood “every stab, every slash” as she slaughtered the children.
The parents' testimony made jurors weep during the emotional trial.
On Monday, mother Marina Krim, who found her children mortally wounded in their bathtub, told a judge that Ortega tried to destroy the Krim family but failed and instead had destroyed her own family.
She said Ortega has shown no remorse, and no one in her family has ever said they were sorry for the children's slayings.
Ortega had been working for the family for nearly two years when she brought the two siblings to the back bathroom of their Upper West Side apartment and stabbed them to death. She then tried to kill herself.
