AMALIA, N.M. -- (KRQE) -- Investigators confirm a child's body was found on the compound where 11 children were found living in squalor.
The Taos County Sheriff was emotional Tuesday as he told a room of reporters that his deputies found the body of a child on that compound Monday morning. They would not confirm the identity of the body, but 4-year-old Abdul Wahhaj has been missing since December.
Police in Georgia say his mother contacted them after her husband, Siraj Wahhaj, told her he was taking the boy to the park. They never returned. After months of investigating, the sheriff's office found the elder Wahhaj on this compound near Amalia, New Mexico.
Also on the property, Lucas Morten, three women, one of whom was pregnant, and 11 malnourished children. However, there was no sign of Abdul.
The sheriff says that body was found in the inner portion of the compound. So far, all five adults have been charged with 11 counts of child abuse.
