Suspect sought for selling $300,000 in fake gold to scam victims

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. -- (WDCW) -- Police are searching for a Gaithersburg man suspected of selling victims $300,000 in fake gold.

Investigators say a suspect known as “Mike” asked an acquaintance who owns a gold store outside of the U.S. if he would interested in buying a large quantity of gold from him. Two victims met “Mike” on August 20 at a Gaithersburg hotel.

“Mike” then took the victims to a public storage unit, where he showed the victims a box which he stated contained the gold and told them they could remove a small sample of the gold to have it tested. That afternoon, the victims had the sample tested at a facility who determined the sample was indeed gold. The next day, the victims met the suspect at the same location and paid him $300,000. The material in the box was tested and found to be copper.
