QUEENS, N.Y. -- (WPIX) -- A 6-year-old boy out with his parents was seriously injured in Queens Thursday evening when a man picked the child up and slammed him into the ground, police said.
The boy was near Metropolitan Avenue and Brevoort Street just before 5 p.m. when the 35-year-old attacker walked up, officials said.
He suffered a concussion, police said. The boy is being treated at a local hospital.
Laurance Gendreau, who police describe as emotionally disturbed, was arrested and faces charges of assault, acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 and harassment. The motive for the attack is unknown.
PIX11 News spoke to the boy's grandfather, who raced up the street and tried to flag the man down.
"He was sitting there, waiting for a pizza delivery," said Naftali Portnoy.
