NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (TCD) --
A Massachusetts man accused of trying to poison his 7-year-old daughter with drain cleaner was sentenced to 16-18 years in prison Monday in Hampshire Superior Court.
Christopher Conley, 37, was found guilty by a jury Friday of attempted murder, assault and battery on a child by means of a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury.
Conley injected Liquid-Plumr into the girl's intestines in April 2015 when the girl was in the hospital. He then overdosed her on painkillers, MassLive.com reports. She survived.
Conley's defense attorney sought a sentence of seven and a half years. The judge sentenced to Conley to 16-18 years for attempted murder, and 12-14 years for assault and battery — the sentences are to be served concurrently.
Conley's ex-wife Julie Conley is set to stand trial on March 9 on assault and battery charges against the daughter.
The girl, now 12 years old, has since been adopted.
Doctors removed more than 6 feet of the girl's intestines and a third of her bladder, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reports. She was released from the hospital in February 2016. She was originally hospitalized to have a cecostomy tube to treat constipation, the Gazette reported. Christopher Conley injected the drain cleaner into the cecostomy tube.
