NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- State Police confirm that Latina Marie Oates has been arrested in the New Orleans area and her two children are safe.
Local police had been searching for the Mississippi woman, who was wanted on first-degree murder charges, and her two children.
Detectives said the two children had been taken by their mother and were believed to be in imminent danger. They had last been seen on surveillance video leaving a Hampton Inn in Laurel, Mississippi, early Tuesday morning.
Latina Marie Oates, 33, of Powell, Ohio, left with two of her children, 9-year-old Mark Oates and 6-year-old Justin Oates. Shortly after their departure from the hotel room, an arrest warrant was issued for Latina Oates for the charge of first-degree murder.
Unconfirmed reports linked Oates to the death of her 9-year-old son Josh, whose body was found Tuesday morning in a room at the Hampton Inn in Laurel where the family had been staying, according to the Laurel Leader-Call newspaper. The boy's death is being investigated as a homicide.
