NEW YORK (TCD) --
Daniel Hernandez, also known as rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, was released from prison on Thursday. He was ordered to be held under house arrest at his home.
Hernandez is serving a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to nine firearms and racketeering charges in February. He was also sentenced to five years of supervised release and 300 hours of community service. He had been serving time in a private facility under contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, NBC News reports.
A federal judge issued “instructive guidance,” NBC News reports, after Hernandez's attorney asked for the rapper's release due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Defense attorney Lance Lazzaro said Hernandez's chronic asthma made him vulnerable to COVID-19. Lazzaro said Thursday Hernandez is not displaying symptoms.
The judge originally rejected the request that the 23-year-old performer be confined at home for the last four months of his two-year term because the judge does not have the legal authority to change the sentence, WPIX reported.
TMZ reports Hernandez must wear a GPS monitor and can only leave his residence for medical reasons, or to visit his attorney with pre-approval from his probation supervisors.
