GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSOC/AP) -- A judge has ordered a new sentencing hearing for a man on South Carolina's death row for strangling a Clemson University student with her bikini top 14 years ago.
Jerry Buck Inman was sentenced to death by a Pickens County judge in 2006. Inman asked the judge for the death sentence at the time of the sentencing. Inman had attempted to kill himself on several occasions while incarcerated including one time that involved swallowing barbed wire, according to the Greenville News.
The Greenville News reports a lower court judge ruled that Inman should have been sentenced by a jury instead of by a judge when the death sentence for killing and raping 20-year-old Tiffany Souers was handed down in 2009.
Inman was a registered sex offender and a serial rapist at the time of the crime. If a jury sentences Inman again, they will decide between death and life without parole.
According to written confessions shown in court, Inman admitted to breaking into Tiffany Souers' ground floor apartment while she slept in May 2006. An autopsy showed she was raped then strangled to death with her bikini top.
