SALT LAKE CITY (KSTU) -- A former University of Utah Police officer saved explicit photos of Lauren McCluskey on his personal phone, showed at least one to a coworker and bragged about getting to look at them whenever he wanted, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
In October 2018, Utah student-athlete McCluskey reported she was being blackmailed by someone, who later was identified as her ex-boyfriend Melvin Rowland. He threatened to release the photos if she didn't give him $1,000.
She paid, then sent copies of the messages and the pictures to the campus police department as evidence.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports: When Miguel Deras, one of the officers assigned to her case, received them, he saved the photos on his personal phone. And days before McCluskey was killed by the man who was blackmailing her, Deras showed off at least one of the images to a male co-worker and bragged about getting to look at them whenever he wanted, according to two fellow officers.
Deras left the university police department in September and began working for Logan City Police, who made a statement Sunday on the subject. Logan Police announced an internal affairs investigation into Officer Miguel Deras in reaction to the Tribune's article.
