ASHEBORO, N.C. (WXII) -- A 26-year-old man is charged with murder after an assault victim died from his injuries Sunday.
Asheboro Police say Darrell Wayne Turner Jr., of Randleman, was arrested Sunday for second-degree murder.
The alleged assault occurred on July 23 around 11:30 p.m. at Lucky's Bar on East Dixie Drive in Asheboro.
WGHP reports a Lucky's employee summoned two Asheboro officers after a fight inside the bar. Witnesses told officers that Turner had punched Rodney S. Duncan, 38, of Siler City, with a closed fist, causing Duncan to lose consciousness and fall.
Duncan was taken to a nearby medical facility and died Sunday morning as a result of his injuries.
Turner was originally charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury, but is now charged with second-degree murder.
Turner is a former employee of the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, but was not an employee at the time of the assault, Sheriff Greg Seabolt said Sunday. According to Seabolt, Turner was terminated two weeks prior due to personnel matters.
