Florida ambulance-theft suspect arrested near sheriff’s station

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (TCD) --
A Florida man was arrested Sunday after an ambulance he allegedly stole from a hospital became stuck in sand and mud near a sheriff’s substation.
Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a report of a stolen ambulance on Sunday, April 4.
A Hernando County Fire & Emergency Services ambulance was stolen from the ambulance bay at Oak Hill Hospital about 12:27 p.m.
The ambulance crew was dropping off a patient inside the hospital when the vehicle was taken, the sheriff’s office said.
The suspect drove the ambulance to the area of Kass Circle of Port Court, about 10 miles away, where the ambulance became stuck in the sand and mud near a large pond.
Witnesses at the scene told deputies the suspect ran on foot toward a shopping plaza nearby.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office substation at 1231 Kass Circle is located within hundreds of feet of the same area.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect was apprehended near the substation.
Trey Cornwell, 29, was arrested and booked at the Hernando County Detention Center on one count of grand theft of a motor vehicle and held on $10,000 bond.
The sheriff’s office did not mention a possible motive.
Cornwell has multiple arrests listed at the detention center.
