EDMOND, Okla. (TCD) --
A couple in the Oklahoma City area was arrested and charged with two counts of child neglect after the woman's 8-year-old son was found severely malnourished.
According to KFOR-TV, in February, a DHS child welfare specialist case worker paid a visit to the boy and the two adults. When she arrived, she discovered the boy weighed 30 pounds and was only about three feet tall. The boy was taken to the hospital and then put in foster care.
Edmond Police Public Information Officer Emily Ward told KFOR the boy wore a size 3T in clothes.
“Those measurements, if you look on World Health Organization, that would be the size of a 2-and-a-half year old,” said Ward.
The child reportedly only gained seven pounds in seven years.
According to KOCO-TV, Ward said he had a "very strict regimen and meal plan, it but it was very small and clearly not enough calories to sustain."
KFOR reported neighbors found the boy digging in a dumpster one night looking for food.
Officers from the Edmond Police Department arrested Akemi Cox, 36, and her fiancé Valero Garcia, 61, outside their home at the Coffee Creek Mobile Home Park.
Cox reportedly lost her five other kids to the foster system as well.
The boy is reportedly doing better and has gained 15 pounds since his placement in foster care.
