HOUSTON (TCD) --
A Houston woman was arrested on Saturday after police say she mistakenly shot her child while shooting at a stray dog across the street.
Houston Police responded to a shooting at about 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, at 700 Dunham Road.
Officers found a 5-year-old boy had been struck in his abdomen by a ricocheting bullet, police said.
The boy’s mother had reportedly fired a small-caliber pistol three times at a dog running loose across the street, police said.
Police said she “fired across a public roadway and in the direction of two occupied houses,” and one round ricocheted and hit her son.
The 5-year-old boy was hospitalized in stable condition, Houston Police said.
The boy’s mother, 24-year-old Angelia Vargas, was arrested and charged with deadly conduct - discharge of a firearm.
The dog was not injured. Police said the dog’s owner was issued a citation for the dog running loose.
