SPARTA, Wis. (TCD) --
An 87-year-old man and two others were injured after a man attacked three people with an ax on June 6.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office released a statement about the incident, which they are now investigating as a homicide. The statement said the office received an emergency call at 11:40 a.m. regarding three people who sustained injuries from an "edged weapon" at a Sparta home.
The statement said when deputies arrived, the suspect stood outside the residence holding a rifle and suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The injury reportedly happened before deputies got there.
The suspect was not immediately identified.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the suspect and one victim went to the hospital via ambulance. The other was transported by a medical helicopter unit. One man, later identified as 87-year-old Bernard Waite, was declared dead at the scene.
The Sheriff's Office said the victims all suffered serious injuries.
In a statement Tuesday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Waite and the suspect were related, but did not elaborate. The suspect and one of the victims remained in the hospital. The third victim, according to the Sheriff's Office, was released after receiving treatment.
