TULSA, Okla. (TCD) -- An Oklahoma woman was arrested Thursday after her 12-year-old daughter gave birth earlier this month.
The girl's mother Desiree Castaneda was taken into custody on charges of child endangerment and enabling child sex abuse on Thursday, July 30, Tulsa Police said.
Police were called to a midtown Tulsa hospital on July 14 when a 12-year-old girl arrived in labor. Juan Miranda-Jara, 24, was with her, and he said he was in a relationship with the girl, and said the child was his, according to Tulsa Police. Miranda-Jara said they had been in a relationship since October 2020.
According to KOKI-TV, doctors at the hospital called police and said they had a rape victim. The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16, KOKI reports.
Tulsa Police arrived at the hospital and arrested Miranda-Jara on charges of first-degree rape of a minor.
Tulsa Police said investigators learned Desiree Castaneda and other family members were "aware of the relationship between the victim and Miranda-Jara" and permitted it. Tulsa Police said the family threw a baby shower for the suspect and victim.
According to KOKI, the victim gave birth and the child was healthy.
Tulsa County Jail records show Castaneda was held on $50,000 bond. Miranda-Jara was held without bond.
