LAPLACE, La. (TCD) -- A Louisiana man was arrested on his wedding night for allegedly shooting two people in highway traffic after an argument in a limousine Saturday night in the New Orleans metropolitan area.
A multi-vehicle collision shut down traffic on Interstate 10/Bonnet Carre Spillway at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, July 31.
St. John Parish Sheriff John Tregre said a shooting within the traffic jam was reported at about 11:08 p.m., the L’Observateur newspaper reports.
In a limousine stuck in traffic, a newlywed couple returning from their wedding -- still in their formal wear -- was in the back seat with a friend of the bride’s, authorities said.
The groom allegedly pulled out a gun and chased the male friend out of the limo, the L’Observateur reports, and allegedly fired several shots.
Devin Jones, 30, still in his tuxedo, allegedly shot the friend of the bride’s in the leg on the roadway. A driver in another car unrelated to the situation was also reportedly struck in his hand by a bullet that came through his back windshield.
Jones’s bride reportedly ran from the limo and flagged down a nearby ambulance. L’Obervateur reports she barricaded herself inside the ambulance while Jones allegedly tried to forcibly enter the vehicle.
Jones suspected a romantic relationship between his new wife and the victim who rode with them, according to the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office.
An off-duty St. John sheriff’s deputy, also stuck in the same traffic, got out of his vehicle about a mile away, and was the primary officer in arresting Devin Jones, according to the sheriff’s office, WGNO-TV reports.
The friend of the bride’s was hospitalized in stable condition; the second victim was treated and released from a hospital.
Devin Jones was held in the St. John Parish Jail on charges of attempted second-degree murder; aggravated second-degree battery; illegal use of weapons; and two counts of aggravated criminal damage to property.
