SPOKANE, Wash. (TCD) -- A Washington man who killed his cellmate, who raped his sister, in state prison was sentenced last week to 298 months in prison.
Shane Goldsby, 26, was serving time at the Airway Heights Corrections Center for stabbing someone, then stealing a law enforcement vehicle and injuring a state trooper in a collision in 2017.
Goldsby was placed in the same cell as Robert Munger, 70, who was serving 43 years for child rape, child molestation and possession of child pornography, the Spokane Spokesman-Review reports.
Goldsby attacked Munger in a common area, punching him 14 times, then kicking and stomping him, the Washington Post reports. Munger died three days later.
Munger had been talking about his crimes, Goldsby told KHQ-TV in 2020, leading Goldsby to figure out Munger raped his younger sister, which was later confirmed by authorities.
An independent investigation said prison officials didn’t know about the connection between Goldsby and Munger, KHQ reports. Goldsby told KHQ in 2020 that he had requested a different cellmate but was ignored.
Goldsby apologized to Munger’s family in court during sentencing on August 3.
