WASHINGTON, Mo. (TCD) -- Police took three adults into custody over the weekend after a 13-year-old boy was found dead from an apparent drug overdose during a sleepover.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Washington Police Department officers responded to a residence on the 600 block of Seventh Street at 9 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they reportedly found a 13-year-old boy dead in his 12-year-old friend's room.
Washington Detective Sergeant Steve Sitzes said the 12-year-old told authorities he and his friend had been experimenting with drugs during their sleepover.
Sitzes told the Post-Dispatch, "The 12-year-old was showing signs of being under the influence of something. He was quite lethargic, and not quite with it."
According to KSDK-TV, the 12-year-old's mother, stepfather, and a tenant who lived in the basement were all arrested on drug charges.
The Post-Dispatch reports the two boys were last seen by the adults at around 11 p.m. Saturday. When police searched the home, they reportedly found drugs including methamphetamine and capsules that could possibly contain heroin or fentanyl, Sitzes told the Post-Dispatch.
KSDK reports the 12-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were put in custody of the Missouri Department of Social Services Children's Division. According to KMOV-TV, the victim was a student at Washington Middle School.
An autopsy for the boy is scheduled for Monday.
