SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 UPDATE: In a breaking development Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021, in the Murdaugh family double-murder case, Alex Murdaugh has admitted to allegedly hiring a would-be hitman to kill him in a botched suicide plot.
Alex Murdaugh reportedly told his attorneys he hired a man to shoot him in the head so Murdaugh's surviving son would receive a $10 million insurance payout. On Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, SLED announced the arrest of Curtis Edward Smith, accused of being Murdaugh's accomplice. Smith is charged with assisted suicide; assault and battery; pointing a firearm; insurance fraud; and conspiracy. Smith is reportedly a former client of Murdaugh's. Murdaugh is likely to face charges, his attorneys have said.
