MOAB, Utah (TCD) -- The Grand County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday they are "actively looking into any connection" between the disappearance of 22-year-old Gabrielle Petito and the double homicides of Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner.
The Suffolk County Police Department in New York said Monday that they were looking into Petito’s disappearance. Petito was on a cross-country road trip in a van with her fiancé Brian Laundrie and has not been heard from since the end of August. Her last known location is believed to have been at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
Laundrie and the van were located this week at his residence in North Port, Florida. North Port Police said Wednesday that Laundrie is a person of interest in the case.
Grand County officials are looking into Petito’s disappearance because according to KTSU-TV, Petito and Laundrie got pulled over in Moab, Utah, on August 12 due to "possible domestic violence."
According to a police report cited by KSTU, Laundrie reportedly "tried to create distance" with Petito by telling her to take a walk. She refused and "began slapping him."
The responding officer wrote in the report, "He grabbed her face and pushed her back as she pressed upon him and the van, he tried to lock her out and succeeded except for his driver’s door, she opened that and forced her way over him and into the vehicle before it drove off."
The report said the incident was more likely a "mental/emotional health 'break' than a domestic assault."
According to KSTU, their argument occurred near Moonflower Community Cooperative.
Kylen Schulte, one of the newlywed victims in the August double homicide, reportedly worked at Moonflower Community Cooperative.
Schulte and Turner were last seen August 13 and were found shot to death August 18 in the South Mesa area of La Sal Loop. No arrests have been made.
No evidence has been shown connecting Schulte and Turner’s murder to Petito’s disappearance. The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said they are continuing to investigate and are "not ruling anything out at this time."
