TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (TCD) -- Police arrested Candy Selena Marban earlier this month after she allegedly threw an injured puppy into the ocean.
According to the Tybee Island Police Department, police received a call September 12 that a puppy had been thrown into the water. When officers arrived, they reportedly found the puppy on the sand "nursing an obvious injury."
Marban reportedly told officers the dog had been injured in an accident, but she couldn’t afford to take the puppy to the vet. Tybee Island Police issued Marban a citation for cruelty to animals. The dog was subsequently put in protective custody.
According to Tybee Island Police, the dog was taken to Savannah for emergency medical treatment. A veterinarian performed a "thorough examination," but, according to police, "the extent of the animal’s injuries was so severe that the only recourse would be euthanasia."
Detectives issued a warrant for Marban’s arrest on a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.
On Monday, police published a wanted poster for Marban. According to WJCL-TV, it was circulated and shared 2,000 times in less than 24 hours on social media. Marban was reportedly found Tuesday and taken into custody.
The police department wrote, "The men and women of the Tybee Island Police Department deeply appreciate the help of the social media community and their passion for animal welfare."
According to Chatham County jail records, Marban’s bond was set at $5,700.
