CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (TCD) -- A teenager reportedly used a knife and axe to kill his parents on Thursday because he wanted to "take charge of his life."
According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, an officer responded to a suspicious person call at 361 Carnaby Drive NE at 2:10 a.m. on Thursday. When he arrived, the officer found 17-year-old Ethan Alexander Orton sitting outside the house "covered in blood."
Cedar Rapids Police said Orton told them he killed his parents. When officers entered the home, they found 42-year-old Casey Arthur Orton and 41-year-old Misty Dawn Scott Slade deceased.
Orton was arrested on two counts of first-degree murder. According to Cedar Rapids Police, Orton is "accused of using a knife and axe to kill his mother and father."
According to KCRG-TV, Orton stabbed his parents with a knife, but his mom reportedly survived the first attack. He then allegedly used an axe to kill her.
KCRG reports that the teen told investigators he did it to "take charge of his life."
Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman said a neighbor heard "moaning or groaning" and called police. Jerman said Orton was "calm" when police arrived.
Police say Orton’s charges were directly filed to adult court due to the nature of the offenses. He was brought to the Linn County Detention Center.
The investigation remains ongoing.
