VANCOUVER, Wash. (TCD) -- A 32-year-old man who was out on bail for domestic violence charges allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend and tried killing their 2-month-old baby.
According the Vancouver Police Department, officers responded to a kidnapping call at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday. The victim, who remained unnamed, reportedly had a no-contact order against the suspect, Aarondeep S. Johal. Vancouver Police said the victim was at a convenience store when Johal allegedly arrived at the store, "assaulted and forcibly abducted the female, put her in his vehicle and fled the area."
Officers reportedly went to the victim’s apartment and heard a baby crying, as well as yelling from inside the residence. According to police, the victim left her apartment and was bleeding due to a head injury. Johal allegedly remained inside holding their 2-month-old child. Johal allegedly threatened "to kill the baby with a hammer he was holding."
The statement says Johal eventually dropped the hammer but then threatened to throw the baby off the balcony.
Vancouver Police said in their statement, "The suspect began to squeeze the baby and a crisis entry hostage rescue involving multiple officers was deployed in an effort to prevent the suspect from killing the baby."
An officer used a Taser on Johal, but it was reportedly unsuccessful. Officers reportedly grabbed Johal’s arm, with one officer punching him in the face in order to get him to free the baby. The statement said the baby was "limp" by this point.
Johal reportedly let go of the baby, who was then transported to the hospital with the female victim. The infant was still hospitalized as of Monday.
According to The Columbian, Johal was indicted on several charges, including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, attempted domestic violence murder, and more.
Johal was booked in the Clark County Jail and was being held on $1 million bail.
