ST. LOUIS (TCD) -- A 25-year-old man suspected of killing six people was arrested over the weekend and faces both local and federal charges.
According to KTVI-TV, the FBI announced Perez Reed was taken into custody at a train stop in Independence, Missouri, while traveling back to St. Louis from Kansas City. Reed was allegedly in custody of the .40-caliber handgun officials believe was used at each crime scene.
KSDK-TV reports the murders occurred in St. Louis, St. Louis County, and Kansas City, Kansas, during September and October. The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office reportedly charged Reed with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of assault. Additionally, KSDK reports he was charged with a federal count of transporting firearms across state lines with the intent to commit a felony.
According to the federal criminal complaint filed by an FBI agent in the Eastern District of Missouri, Reed allegedly shot the first victim Sept. 12 at approximately 9:04 p.m. at a bus stop on Chambers Road in St. Louis County. Reed allegedly approached the victim from behind and "shot him several times without warning." His .40-caliber Smith & Wesson cartridge casings were found at the scene.
KSDK reports the man who was shot at the bus stop was not killed, but he did suffer serious injuries.
According to the criminal complaint, almost exactly 24 hours after the first shooting, on Sept. 13 at 9:34 p.m., St. Louis County Police responded to a shooting on the 9900 block of Glen Owen Drive. The victim, who KSDK identified as 16-year-old Marnay Haynes, was shot in the arm and head. The same cartridges were found at the scene.
On Sept. 16 at approximately 10:23 p.m., a third victim suffered a gunshot wound to the face at the BP gas station at 4126 W. Florissant Ave. According to the affidavit, the victim was "conscious and breathing but unable to provide a statement." A detective reportedly followed a trail of blood, where he found one .40-caliber cartridge.
An hour later that same night, a woman named Pamela Abercrombie was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. That crime scene was reportedly half a mile away from the BP gas station shooting. Once again, detectives found the same cartridge casing.
The affidavit says on Sept. 19 at 12:10 p.m., St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers found Casey Ross in a vacant lot in the 1500 block of Mullanphy Street with gunshot wounds to the head and body. Ross had reportedly been dead "for an extended period" because the blood looked dry. Officials collected the cartridge casing at the scene. This pattern continued at the rest of the crime scenes as well.
Lester Robinson was found dead Sept. 26 at approximately 7:15 a.m. in Ferguson, with gunshot wounds to the head and hand.
On Nov. 2, Kansas City Kansas Police said they were investigating "suspicious deaths" at a high-rise apartment on the 900 block of Washington Boulevard. Officers responded to a call at the apartment complex Nov. 1 at 8:15 a.m. regarding a deceased male. The next day, officers returned to the complex when an adult male and adult female were found dead.
KSHB-TV reports Damon Irvin was discovered Nov. 1 and the victims found the next day were Rau'Daja Fairrow and Roy Wright. Irvin and Fairrow’s deaths were ruled homicides, but Wright reportedly died of natural causes. Wright is not mentioned in the affidavit.
Fairrow was reportedly found naked in her apartment with gunshot wounds on her back and head. The affidavit says surveillance footage shows Irvin and Reed walking into Irvin’s apartment together on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29. Video also shows Reed entering and leaving Fairrow’s apartment on Oct. 29, but he told FBI investigators he only knows her because he bought drugs from her.
According to the Kansas City Star, Reed is in federal custody. The St. Louis County Prosecutor is reportedly asking for $2 million bond if he gets transferred to county custody.
