HOUSTON (TCD) -- A 25-year-old woman was killed and several others were injured when gunfire broke out during a celebration of life Sunday night.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, deputies responded to 1403 North Market Loop when someone in a vehicle fired shots at a crowd gathered for a celebration of life. Gonzalez said one person was pronounced dead at the hospital.
In a follow-up tweet, Gonzalez said 14 people total were injured, including Disha Allen, a woman in her mid-20s. The victims were all treated at a local hospital, and some suffered "serious gunshot wound injuries." Gonzalez said the suspect or suspects are believed to have been driving a dark-colored sedan.
The celebration was reportedly honoring a homicide victim from Baytown.
KHOU-TV reports Allen had a 4-year-old daughter whose birthday was just a few weeks away. Allen reportedly attended the vigil to honor her daughter’s godfather, the victim from Baytown. Her little girl reportedly stayed at home and did not attend the ceremony.
According to KHOU, Gonzalez said there was a bounce house at the scene that was filled with kids when the shots were fired, so some of the victims could have been children.
The motive remains unknown.
