JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (TCD) -- Prosecutors are hoping to significantly decrease prison time for Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, who was sentenced to 110 years in prison earlier this month for a truck crash that killed four people.
A petition quickly gained traction online calling for Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to commute Aguilera-Mederos' sentence or grant him clemency. On Dec. 23, First Judicial District Attorney Alexis King announced in a statement her office would petition the court to consider a shorter sentence range of 20 to 30 years.
King wrote, "As the jury found, Mr. Aguilera-Mederos knowingly made multiple active choices that resulted in the death of four people, serious injuries to others, and mass destruction. This sentencing range reflects an appropriate outcome for that conduct, which was not an accident."
She said she believed a new hearing would be the "best path to securing justice for everyone involved."
King said her team is working alongside the governor’s office "to ensure that the victims and their loved ones are heard both in this process and the pending clemency application with the Governor."
According to KDVR-TV, a virtual hearing for the case occurred Monday and District Court Judge Bruce Jones scheduled another hearing for Jan. 13.
