PHOENIX (TCD) -- A 29-year-old father was arrested after his 2-year-old son reportedly died in an accidental shooting.
Phoenix Police tweeted Jan. 12 in the afternoon that officers responded to an apartment complex near 19th Avenue and Thunderbird Road regarding a shooting. Police said the incident involved a "young child who was critically injured."
According to KNXV-TV, 2-year-old Kayden Lewis died after being taken to a hospital. The child’s father, Joshua Lewis, was taken into custody for one count of child abuse.
Phoenix Police reportedly said Lewis kept the gun in an area that was accessible to his son Kayden, AZFamily reports. Sgt. Andy Williams said he did not know who called 911 and said the shooting appeared to be an accident. The boy’s immediate family was reportedly home when the shooting occurred, including another sibling.
According to AZFamily, Williams said, "This is a horrible tragedy for the family, for this young boy, for the community. It's a sobering reminder of the importance of gun safety. If you are a gun owner, you have a great responsibility to make sure your guns are somewhere safe, inaccessible to children or anyone else who should not have them."
