ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. (TCD) -- A 16-year-old female is accused of shooting her mother because the mother tried to take her meth away.
According to a news release, St. Louis County 911 received a call on Jan. 16 at 4:26 p.m. about an adult woman on her way to the hospital with a gunshot wound. The Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 40-year-old Stephanie Straw of Cook, Minn., and said the suspect is believed to be her teenage daughter.
The statement said the shooting reportedly took place at a residence and that the suspect "had access to a vehicle." Law enforcement officials located the suspected vehicle stuck in a ditch about 2 miles north of the residence, as well as another car with three occupants.
Deputies detained the three people and identified one of them as the suspect. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the other two people were a "mother and daughter good Samaritan who lived in the area [who] had been summoned by the suspect for help." They were released following questioning by law enforcement.
The teen was taken into custody and charged in St. Louis County Juvenile District Court with second-degree attempted murder. Straw, the victim, was reportedly last known to be in stable condition.
According to WDIO-TV, which cites the juvenile petition, Straw took away her daughter’s methamphetamine and the teen wanted it back. KBJR-TV reports Straw returned the meth after she realized she had been shot and she called her boyfriend for help.
