COCOA, Fla. (TCD) -- A 18-year-old man was taken into custody after he allegedly attacked a jogger with a belt in order to kill him and keep the body in his closet.
According to Florida Today, which cites the arrest report, suspect Logan William Smith reportedly first noticed the runner six weeks before the attack on Jan. 16. Smith allegedly had a rubber mallet, aerosol can of deodorant, and cloth belt at the ready as he waited for the jogger. WOFL-TV, citing the affidavit, says Smith "waited for the victim to run past the light pole and proceeded to run after him."
Smith allegedly "tossed the clothing robe belt over the victim’s head until it was around the front area of the victim’s neck."
The aerosol can and mallet were reportedly left in the driveway hidden between two parked cars.
Florida Today reports Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carson Hendren wrote in the affidavit that Smith "planned on killing the victim by strangulation, dragging his body to the driveway and onto the bed sheet."
The victim, however, knows martial arts and used those skills to free himself from the chokehold, according to WOFL.
Law enforcement officials say Smith allegedly got the idea for the attack after watching a violent movie but did not say which one. The arrest report alleges Smith "further planned to place the victim’s body into his closet where the defendant stated no one would know, and the defendant could have the victim’s body all to himself."
Additionally, the report says, "The defendant stated that he also planned to play with the victim to fulfill his sexual fantasies."
WOFL reports the victim, who remained unnamed, had never seen or spoken to Smith before that day.
According to Brevard County Jail records, Smith was booked on an attempted murder charge and is being held without bond.
