ATLANTA (TCD) -- A 6-month-old child was killed this week after getting caught in crossfire during a drive-by shooting.
On Monday, Jan. 24, at approximately 2:35 p.m., Atlanta Police Department officers responded to a shooting call near Anderson Avenue NW and Tiger Flowers Drive NW. The department said in a statement officers located a 6-month-old child who had been shot while in a car. According to preliminary investigation, Atlanta Police said the child "was shot during a drive by incident but was not the intended target."
The infant reportedly died from the injuries.
Atlanta Police announced Jan. 25 that a light-colored Jeep SUV shown in video footage appears to be a "vehicle of interest."
According to WSB-TV, the child’s mother said her car was between two other cars that were shooting at each other. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution identified the boy as Grayson Matthew Fleming-Gray.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Mayor Andre Dickens came to the crime scene and said, "These children are bearing the burden and the pain of adults who are choosing to use guns to solve disputes. The children are bearing this burden with their lives, and I’m here to ask, and to demand, that it stop right now."
Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant called the shooting "painful" and said, "This one hurts."
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted, "Our hearts are broken for the loss of this innocent child. We mourn this unfathomable tragedy tonight with the family. Please join us in keeping them in your hearts & prayers. This kind of lawlessness must end, & these criminals must be held accountable."
According to WSB, Grayson is the second child under the age of 6 to die by a gun this year in Atlanta.
