Ex-school cop accused of sexual abuse against minor

NEWPORT, Wash. (TCD) -- A former police officer who worked as the school resource officer stands accused of sexually abusing a child.
According to a press release from the Newport Police Department, officers were made aware of criminal allegations against Raul Lopez from the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 18. KXLY-TV reports Lopez lives in Bonner County, Idaho, where the alleged crimes took place. Lopez was reportedly placed on administrative leave. Police say his peace officer powers were suspended pending the investigation.
On Friday, Jan. 21, police say Lopez resigned from his position with the Newport Police Department. On Sunday, Jan. 23, officers from the Newport Police Department reportedly learned that Lopez had turned himself in to investigators, and he was arrested.
According to police, Lopez was charged with two counts of lewd conduct with a minor child under 16 years old and two counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 16 years old.
Lopez reportedly worked as the school resource officer at the Newport Unified School District, and they have been informed about the allegations. The crimes Lopez allegedly committed were not directly related to his position.
Police Chief Mark Duxbury told KXLY, "The thoughts and prayers of the Newport Police Department staff are with the victim and the victim’s family. We are sickened, shocked, and angered by the alleged conduct of Mr. Lopez."
