DELTONA, Fla. (TCD) -- A 46-year-old father was arrested this week after allegedly shooting his daughter’s ex-boyfriend.
According to a press release from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, Feb. 3, deputies responded to 3049 Waterman St. at approximately 9:30 a.m. to a report of a shooting. At the scene, authorities reportedly found a 23-year-old victim lying in the driveway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The Sheriff’s Office says the victim was transported to the hospital and treated for his critical injuries.
Upon further investigation, the Sheriff’s Office says they learned the victim had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s house because they were still friends. In the driveway, the victim was reportedly met by his ex-girlfriend’s father, Todd Powers, and her brother. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the three got into a verbal argument that eventually became physical.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the brother told authorities that the victim punched him, so he punched back, and they began to fight on the driveway. However, detectives reportedly did not find any signs of physical injuries or struggle on either person. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the brother told authorities that after the physical fight, he went inside and Powers stayed outside near the driveway.
Multiple gunshots were reportedly heard shortly after the brother left. The Sheriff’s Office says, "Some of the shots could be overheard on the 911 call reporting the shooting, followed by a male voice yelling: 'I don’t know what he thought was going to happen.'"
Neighbors were reportedly interviewed, and captured audio recordings were reviewed. According to the Sheriff’s Office, it is believed that Powers fired at the victim multiple times "over the span of several minutes, an extended timeframe during which Powers was not under threat."
Powers was reportedly arrested and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on $126,000 bond. The Sheriff’s Office says he was charged with attempted second-degree murder and violation of probation from a prior possession of a controlled substance charge.
The victim reportedly remains in critical condition as of Thursday, March 3.
