EUGENE, Ore. (TCD) -- A 47-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison earlier this week in connection with the beating death of his 87-year-old grandmother in 2019.
According to a press release from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, on April 5, 2019, deputies responded to a home in Creswell to a report of an injured person. At the scene, authorities reportedly found Sally Baldwin severely beaten to the point she could not explain what had happened.
Baldwin was reportedly transported to the hospital and passed away days later. According to the Register-Guard, the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that Baldwin’s cause of death was blunt force injuries from an assault.
The Sheriff’s Office says responders discovered a kicked-in door at her house and belongings reportedly scattered around the residence.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Baldwin’s grandson James Holt was identified as the suspect. Holt was reportedly arrested and later charged with murder after his grandmother died.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Holt pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Dec. 20. The Register-Guard reports as part of his plea deal, other charges against Holt were dropped, including charges for raping Baldwin, robbery, burglary, and three other counts of first-degree murder.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, on Monday, March 7, Holt was officially sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
