ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (TCD) -- A 35-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting three children over a four-year period.
The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced March 22 that an Arapahoe County Judge handed Brian Eugene Barcelona a 200-year sentence following his conviction on 12 counts of sexual assault of a child by one in position of trust and four counts of sexual exploitation of a child.
In 2018, a father told Aurora Police that his son had been sexually assaulted by Barcelona, who is the boy’s cousin. According to the District Attorney’s Office, investigators determined Barcelona "repeatedly sexually assaulted" the boy and his two siblings, who were between the ages of 10 and 13 at the time, from 2015 to 2018. Investigators also reportedly found incriminating photos on Barcelona’s phone that depicted the sexual abuse.
Barcelona pleaded not guilty and went to trial in October.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Danielle Jaramillo said in the statement, "In all my years of prosecuting these types of cases, I struggle to recall another one involving such severe abuse or brazen conduct. The defendant felt so secure in his ability to exploit his position of trust to silence these children that he actually kept photographs as trophies."
