BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (TCD) -- A 31-year-old man is accused of killing his mother and young son after their bodies were found when police entered the home.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, on April 3 at 5:12 p.m., officers from the department's West Precinct were called to a residence at 4909 Hillman Drive SW for a welfare check. Family members called police because they grew concerned that they had not heard from 62-year-old Cynthia Burt.
Birmingham Police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue forced entry into the home and found Cynthia and her 3-year-old grandson, Desmond Burt Jr., in a back room. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Both Desmond and Cynthia sustained injuries that helped detectives deem their deaths a homicide.
On April 5, Birmingham Police arrested Desmond Burt Sr. for two counts of capital murder. Burt Sr. was reportedly standing outside the home with other family members when police arrived to conduct the welfare check, according to AL.com.
AL.com reports Interim Police Chief Scott Thurmond said blunt force trauma was involved in their deaths and that they "died at the same time or in close proximity."
Burt Sr. was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and is being held without bond.
