SANTA ANA, Calif. (TCD) -- A woman from Austin, Texas, was arrested this week after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend to death in California more than 25 years ago.
According to a news release from the Santa Ana Police Department, on Jan. 4, 1996, at around 3 a.m., police responded to 2205 N. Broadway St. to a report of a forced entry and stabbing. The 911 caller reportedly told police a Black male subject broke into the apartment and stabbed Christopher Hervey multiple times. At the scene, authorities pronounced the victim deceased from numerous stab wounds to the upper torso, police say.
Hervey reportedly lived in the apartment with his girlfriend, Jade Benning. According to police, she made "general statements about the incident." From outside the apartment, neighbors allegedly heard a loud argument that lasted around 15 minutes.
Benning reportedly relocated to Las Vegas and then to Austin, Texas, in 2001.
According to police, the Santa Ana Police Department received an anonymous letter in 2020 "implicating Benning as involved in the murder of Christopher Hervey."
Police reopened the case, "and the investigation continued."
Forensic testing was completed, and eventually enough evidence was collected to issue a $1 million arrest warrant for Benning, police say.
According to police, on Tuesday, May 3, at around 2:20 p.m., Benning was arrested near her home in Austin, Texas. She will undergo the process of extradition.
