WELLS, Maine (TCD) -- A 19-year-old man faces a murder charge after he allegedly shot and killed a 2-year-old family member and wounded two others.
On Saturday, May 21, Wells Police confirmed there was a shooting "involving a family," and a suspect had been detained at the department. Maine State Police arrived at the scene and began assisting with the investigation. A day after the shooting, on May 22, Maine State Police announced detectives arrested Andrew Huber Young on suspicion of murder.
According to the statement, Young allegedly opened fire at the Wells residence at 4:20 p.m. and two males were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, while the little girl suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Maine State Police identified her as Octavia Huber Young.
York Hospital told WMTV-TV Octavia arrived in "critical/extremis condition." Doctors reportedly tried resuscitating her and then transferred her to Maine Medical Center in Portland via LifeFlight.
Maine State Police said Octavia died from her injuries, and the coroner will conduct an autopsy "in the coming days." Officials did not name the other two male victims or elaborate on Octavia’s relationship to Andrew Huber Young, though they did say the two are related.
Andrew remains in the York County Jail without bail.
Octavia’s uncle Craig Higgins described the little girl to WMTV as "the sweetest" and a "happy-go-lucky kid."
