HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TCD) -- A former nurse was sentenced to life in prison this week for reportedly fatally poisoning her husband with insulin and burying him in her garage.
According to WHNT-TV, a Madison County Circuit Court judge handed Marjorie "Nikki" Cappello the sentence for her role in James "Jim" Cappello’s death, though she also received time served. Jim was reportedly a well-respected private investigator in the area. At her sentencing hearing, Nikki reportedly showed no emotion as she learned her fate.
WHNT reports Nikki was convicted of intentional murder in May following a four-day trial. The jury reportedly reached the verdict in about half an hour.
According to WAFF-TV, Nikki reported her husband missing Sept. 21, 2018. His co-workers reportedly became concerned because he did not show up to work, and when they went to her home, she refused to let them inside.
Huntsville Police went to the Cappello residence and could reportedly smell a decomposing body. Nikki reportedly refused to let officers search the home’s garage, but they eventually obtained a search warrant and found Jim’s body wrapped in a tarp near a car. His feet were reportedly set on the floorboard as if someone had been trying to put him in the vehicle.
On Sept. 22, 2018, Nikki allegedly called a friend and asked her to help move the body and get rid of it but then walked back the request and told her not to worry about it.
WAFF reports during the search of the Cappello residence, an investigator found a bottle of insulin. Detectives went to the hospital where she worked as a nurse and learned that bottles of insulin had gone missing. Some of Nikki’s co-workers reportedly told investigators she admitted to having problems with her husband and allegedly said the only way the problems would end was if her husband died.
Jim reportedly believed Nikki was using drugs and he wanted to separate and gain custody of their daughter.
Jim’s sister reportedly now has full custody of Nikki and Jim’s daughter.
