MUNCIE, Ind. (TCD) -- A 28-year-old man and his 27-year-old wife were arrested after their son allegedly opened a gun safe and fatally shot their daughter.
According to the Muncie Star Press, Muncie Police and other emergency personnel responded to 2810 S. Monroe St. on Tuesday, July 26, at 2:25 p.m. and found a 5-year-old girl with a "severe gunshot wound to the head."
EMS transported the little girl to Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released yet.
The Muncie Star Press, which cites police reports, says the children’s father, Jacob Grayson, told investigators the boy unlocked a gun safe and "shot his sister" while Jacob’s wife, Kimberly Grayson, napped. The key to open the safe had reportedly been left in the lock.
The little boy reportedly said he "accidentally shot his sister while playing with the gun."
WXIN-TV reports Jacob and Kimberly were booked on charges of neglect of dependent resulting in death and neglect of a dependent.
Delaware County Jail records show Kimberly Grayson was being held on $65,000 bond, but Jacob had been released.
