Man arrested after teen fatally stabbed, 4 others injured while tubing on Wisconsin river

SOMERSET, Wis. (TCD) -- A 52-year-old man was taken into custody after allegedly stabbing five people — including one fatally — while tubing on a river.
On Saturday, July 30, the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a critical incident in Somerset and five people suffered stab wounds, with injuries ranging from serious to critical condition. A suspect was taken into custody, and the Sheriff’s Office said there was no threat to the public.
In a follow-up press release the next day, the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office provided more details about the incident. According to the statement, the St. Croix County Emergency Communication Center received a call at 3:47 p.m. about a stabbing on Apple River near Mile Post 9. The victims were reportedly tubing and all suffered stab wounds to their midsections.
Two victims were flown to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, two went to Regions Hospital by ambulance, and the fifth was taken to Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, Minnesota, where he was pronounced dead. He was 17 years old.
According to The Associated Press, he was identified as Isaac Schuman. He was a rising senior at Stillwater High School.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, witnesses contacted law enforcement after seeing the suspect at the exit point for the recreational tubers on Apple River. He was reportedly taken into custody without incident.
The statement says the other four victims are 20-year-old and 22-year-old males from Luck, Wisconsin, and a 24-year-old female and a 22-year-old male from Elk River, Minnesota. The two victims from Luck have reportedly been discharged from the hospital.
Associated Press identified the suspect as 52-year-old Nicolae Miu. He has been charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. He is being held on $1 million bail.
