MINNEAPOLIS (TCD) -- A 39-year-old woman was arrested and charged after allegedly fatally shooting her boyfriend by accident during an argument.
According to WCCO-TV, on Monday, Aug. 29, the shooting happened on the 2400 block of Cole Avenue Southeast. Janice Hawkins-Green reportedly told police she shot her boyfriend by accident in the stomach and that the gun went off while she was handing it to him.
Upon their arrival, officers found the victim covered in blood with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, KSTP-TV reports. First aid was reportedly attempted, but the victim later succumbed to his injury at the hospital.
In an interview, Hawkins-Green told investigators that she and the victim had been dating for two years and began to argue. She allegedly told her boyfriend to gather his things and leave, and then she grabbed her boyfriend’s sweatshirt and a gun from her car.
Hawkins-Green reportedly said that as she was handing the gun to her boyfriend, she was holding it with the barrel facing toward her boyfriend to prevent it from going off and shooting herself.
After the shooting, KSTP reports that the victim’s 15-year-old daughter placed the gun underneath a bed, and officers recovered it from the scene.
Hawkins-Green was arrested and booked into Hennepin County Jail for murder and second-degree manslaughter, records show. She was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 2.
