LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (TCD) -- A 17-year-old faces a jury this week as he heads to trial for charges relating to the deaths of five of his family members in 2019.
According to WAAY-TV, opening statements in Mason Sisk’s trial kicked off Tuesday, Sept. 13.
On Sept. 2, 2019, Sisk, who was then 14 years old, allegedly killed his father, 38-year-old John Sisk, his stepmother, 35-year-old Mary Sisk, and their three children, 6-year-old Kane, 5-year-old Rorrie, and 6-month-old Colson, AL.com reports. He allegedly shot them all in the head as they slept.
According to AL.com, Sisk allegedly called 911 after the shooting, and the next day showed police officers where he reportedly stashed the gun, which was in the home illegally. He was formally indicted Jan. 27, 2021.
WHNT-TV reports Sisk allegedly told police at first that he was in the basement of his home playing video games when he heard the gunshots, but he later reportedly confessed to killing his family.
Sisk reportedly told investigators his parents "argue a lot, and I got fed up with it," AL.com reports.
He added, "The kids were going through a lot."
Prior to his trial, Sisk’s attorneys argued the teen wasn’t read his Miranda rights for at least two hours when he was first detained and officials searched through his phone without obtaining a warrant first. A judge recently ruled the jury will be able to hear his alleged confession despite Sisk's attorneys trying to prevent the evidence from being shared at the trial.
Sisk is being tried as an adult and could face life in prison if he is convicted. The death penalty, however, will not be considered because he was a minor at the time of the shootings.
