NEW YORK (TCD) -- A 25-year-old pleaded guilty last week to killing his mother, who had been reported missing, and leaving her body in a garbage container.
In a statement, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced Jared Eng entered a plea for second-degree murder and was sentenced to a minimum of 18 years to life and a maximum of 22 years to life in prison.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, on Feb. 4, 2019, Eng reported his mother, Paula Chin, missing and said she had been gone for several days. However, the District Attorney’s Office said Chin "had been viciously stabbed" by her son in their Tribeca apartment "in an attempt to accelerate his inheritance."
After killing Chin, Eng reportedly "sanitized the apartment and transported the body to the family home in Morristown, New Jersey, with the help of two others."
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports the two alleged associates were identified as Jennifer Lopez and Caitlyn O’Rourke. Lopez was reportedly charged with three counts of hindering prosecution, three counts of tampering with physical evidence, and one count of concealment of a human corpse, while O’Rourke faces charges of concealing a human corpse and tampering with evidence.
Those charges are reportedly still pending.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office says Eng sent messages after killing his mom that said, "It’s done," "I’m free," and noted he "got rid of [his] problem."
Chin’s body was discovered "stuffed in a garbage container on the premises, with multiple stab wounds and signs of blunt impact to her head."
Detectives reportedly found bloody gloves, bloodstains, and duct tape.
After Chin’s death, Eng reportedly started switching his mom’s passwords for her bank accounts and did research on inheritance attorneys. He also reportedly Google searched for ways to get rid of a body, including "diy bone meal."
Eng reportedly told the New York Post his mom was worth about $10 million. Eng and his brother were reportedly supposed to inherit money from their late father when they turned 35. Their father’s will reportedly stipulated everything went to his wife, but if she died, Eng and his brother would split everything.
District Attorney Alvin Bragg said, "This was a brutal and shocking murder of the defendant’s own mother, and while nothing can undo this tragedy, today’s guilty plea represents an important step towards justice. My thoughts are with those who continue to mourn Ms. Chin’s loss."
