CHICAGO (TCD) -- Police discovered the remains of a landlord in the home’s freezer this week after a concerned tenant called authorities to report the victim missing.
Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said in a news briefing officers went to a residence on the 5900 block of North Washtenaw when a resident who rented a room in the home called to say they hadn’t seen their landlord in over 24 hours. Detectives reportedly confirmed that the landlord, who was not identified, was seen in the neighborhood Sunday.
The resident who called police told investigators there was another person in the home tenants "were afraid of" who later became a suspect. The suspect reportedly called a tow truck Monday and "carried a heavy bag" to the truck.
According to Deenihan, the suspect allegedly "dumped a large plastic bag in a garbage can at Foster Beach."
Detectives went to the beach and found "bloody towels" in the garbage can. The evidence was transported to the medical examiner’s office.
While back at the residence, detectives discovered human remains in the freezer. They then obtained a search warrant to "retrieve evidence properly."
Detectives learned the suspect “pulled a knife” on the tow truck driver. Police located the suspect and took them into custody for assault.
The investigation remains ongoing.
