WILLOUGHBY, Ohio (TCD) -- A 16-year-old female restaurant worker reportedly risked her life by clinging to the hood of a car after chasing three teens who dined and dashed.
According to WJW-TV, on Sunday, Nov. 20, three girls went into a Buffalo Wild Wings in Willoughby and ordered $115 worth of food but left without paying. The manager reportedly chased after the suspects, and employee Kayla Sherman followed suit.
Willoughby Det. Lt. John Begovic told WEWS-TV the manager "tried to get the registration off the back of the vehicle. The rear passenger removed the temp tag from the rear passenger window."
Sherman was reportedly standing near the car and ended up on the hood of the BMW. The teens drove off through the parking lot with Sherman still on the car. A second employee was reportedly hanging on to one of the car doors.
Sherman told WEWS the people inside the car "had a sunroof [and] they were throwing things out of the sunroof at me."
The car then reportedly turned onto a busy street and drove at about 50 mph. WJW reports the driver allegedly accelerated up to 65 mph at one point.
Dashcam footage provided by WKYC-TV shows a Willoughby Police officer driving through a parking lot and chasing after the BMW. At one point in the video, Sherman is seen holding onto the hood.
According to WJW, Sherman was eventually able to roll off the car and into the snow. A police car was close behind and reportedly got her to safety and warmth. The BMW reportedly spun out after an officer from the Wickliffe Police Department tried to conduct a traffic stop.
A 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds were arrested. WKYC reports one of the suspects had previously been reported missing out of Cleveland.
Sherman told WJW, "I really truly did not believe I was going to make it. I truly believed that I was going to die. They were going to either make me fall off somehow, or if I fell off, they would run me over. For someone to intentionally hit me over a $115 check was baffling to me."
