CLEARFIELD, Utah (TCD) -- A 26-year-old man faces several charges after he allegedly beat his grandparents with a hammer, then shot them to death in their home.
On Nov. 23 at 3:10 p.m., the Clearfield Police Department received a call from a woman saying she came home to find her 87-year-old father and 85-year-old mother deceased in the garage. She reportedly said she believed her son killed the couple, and that he was still inside the residence.
Police officers arrived at the scene and found the 60-year-old caller still in the garage with the victims, who had suffered "traumatic injuries."
The daughter was escorted from the area and police surrounded the house. The 26-year-old, who the Clearfield Police identified as Jeremy Belt, spoke with an officer and eventually left the house.
Belt was taken into custody without incident.
Belt, his mother, and his grandparents — the victims — reportedly all lived in the same home.
On Nov. 25, the Clearfield Police Department identified the victims as Thomas Walker and Janice Walker, and said Belt was booked into the Davis County Jail on charges of two counts of murder, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, misdemeanor assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal mischief.
According to court documents cited by KSTU-TV, Belt allegedly believed some of his family members were trying to hurt him, and he hit his grandparents with a hammer. He allegedly cut the wire in the garage so the door would not open and then shot them.
The same day, Belt reportedly kicked another family member in the face.
Thomas and Janice Walker were reportedly members of Clearfield City Citizens Patrol for over 10 years, the department said, and "volunteered countless hours to the community until 2019."
Belt is being held in the Davis County Jail without bail.
