University of Idaho stabbings: Moscow Police search for white car near King Road home

MOSCOW, Idaho (TCD) -- Police investigating the brutal November stabbing deaths of four college students have announced they are looking for information about a white sedan reportedly spotted near the crime scene.

On Dec. 7, Moscow Police released a statement saying detectives want to speak with the occupant or occupants of a 2011 to 2013 white Hyundai Elantra with an unknown license plate because they "believe the occupant(s) of this vehicle may have critical information to share regarding the case."

The investigation into the slayings of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle began in the early hours of Nov. 13. Goncalves and Mogen were out at a bar on the night of Nov. 12 and arrived home just before 2 a.m. Chapin and Kernodle, who were a couple, reportedly spent the evening at a fraternity house nearby. They arrived back at the residence on King Road at about 1:45 a.m.

Chapin didn’t live at the King Road residence, police said.

Two other roommates lived at the home and got back from their nights out at 1 a.m.

Then, Chapin, Kernoodle, Mogen, and Goncalves were killed.

According to Moscow Police, on Nov. 13, one of the surviving roommates called a friend for help because she believed one of the victims "had passed out and was not waking up."

Someone called 911 at 11:58 a.m. to report an unconscious person, and when police arrived, they found the four students deceased.

A dog was reportedly inside the home but was unharmed.

The Latah County Coroner determined Kernoodle, Goncalves, Mogen, and Chapin all died from stab wounds, and their manner of death was homicide. The coroner reportedly said the four victims were likely asleep when they were attacked, and some of them had defensive wounds.

Several theories have emerged since the stabbings, including one that Goncalves allegedly had a stalker. In their Dec. 8 update, Moscow Police said they have "pursued hundreds of pieces of information related to this topic but have not verified or identified a stalker."

Police said there are no suspects in custody and they have not located a weapon.

On Dec. 1, Moscow Police said, "We remain consistent in our belief that this was a targeted attack, but investigators have not concluded if the target was the residence or if it was the occupants."

Moscow Police are working with members of the FBI and Idaho State Police in the investigation.
